The 9th International Shoebox Sculpture Exhibition
This traveling exhibition features over eighty small
sculptures by artists from around the world. Central to the exhibition's
concept is the challenge of creating works on a small scale, while maintaining
integrity and control of sculptural elements. By using the format of
a shoebox, artists show how they address the challenge of scale. The 9th International Shoebox Sculpture
Exhibition is organized by the University of Hawaii Art Gallery and supported
in part by a grant from the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the
Arts. This
triennial has attracted a large number of well-known artists from Hawaii,
the U.S. mainland, Australia, Belgium, Canada, Finland, Germany, Great
Britain, Japan, Mexico, Norway, The Netherlands, South Korea, Taiwan,
and Vietnam.

Mark Messersmith: A Southern Landscape
“The Southern landscape I paint is, at least for awhile, still out there somewhere, somewhere just beyond the urban sprawl, our shopping malls, and trailer parks. It is a land still inhabited by powerful birds, vigilant panthers, wary gators, black water swamps, old Cypress trees, back road citrus stands, and careening logging trucks ….”
